Spring Brings Life to the Ranch

Hard Work & Dedication

Engel & Völkers Land & Ranch Jim Hickey Real Estate

At Jim Hickey Engel & Völkers Jackson Hole, we work with buyers new to ranch life every season, and branding is one of the first traditions we encourage them to experience firsthand. If you are interested in purchasing a cattle ranch and have never been a rancher before, branding season is something you will want to learn about and celebrate with family, neighbors, and friends.

As the snow melts across the Tetons, calving season begins. When calving season winds down, it moves into branding season. Branding season is much more than just gathering up the new calves — it is a time for connection and tradition. Ranchers bring friends and family together to help with the process and celebrate with delicious food.

Neighbors show up knowing that they will receive the same helping hand in return. If you are a new property owner, you must respect the code and understand the local traditions. The most established ranches typically brand on the same weekend every year, so plan accordingly when setting your date. Make sure to support your neighbors because, in return, they will be more willing to help you out.

On branding day, show respect to the ranch manager and listen to their guidance. They will typically assign roles for roping, wrestling, branding, tagging, vaccinating, and castrating. Each ranch holds its own traditions when it comes to branding — you might find differences in how they rope and vaccinate. It is important to respect the ranch owners and managers and how their operations work. Don't overstep your boundaries; listen, and you might pick up some great tips that will help with your own ranch. Jim Hickey Real Estate can connect you with established ranching communities across Idaho and Wyoming where these traditions run deep, helping you find not just a property, but a place in the community.

What does it mean to Brand?

Branding permanently marks a cow or calf's hide to prove ownership, prevent theft, and help ranchers easily identify their animals. There are two types of branding — hot branding and freeze branding. Hot branding is the traditional method in which a custom metal iron is heated over a fire (or electrically) and briefly pressed against the cow's hide. This sears the hair follicles, leaving a hairless scar shaped like the brand. Freeze branding is a modern alternative where an iron is chilled in liquid nitrogen or a dry ice and alcohol mixture. When applied to the cow's hide, it kills the pigment-producing cells in that area, causing the hair to grow back white in the shape of the brand.

Branding has been one of my favorite times of year. It is a time to gather with friends, share stories, and celebrate the hard work. Branding can look different from ranch to ranch, but one thing remains true — it values hard work, hospitality, resilience, and a tradition passed down through generations.
